<image:title>Blog - Preparations & Promote U - Ultimately I didn't have my hair stylist go too crazy. He simply gave me a few natural looking high lights and trimmed my hair off enough to be healthy again. I oftentimes joke that my parents' dog gets his hair cut more than I do, which is actually true! The last time that I got my hair cut and styled was during my Tokyo Trek (a year ago). I absolutely loved this experience, however the language barrier did definitely impact the final product. I became a brunette! Even though that is not what I had envisioned, but I did not fault my stylist. On account of our inability to speak the same language I just sort of ended up surrendering and told him that what he said sounded good. As a result I came out as a bobbed brunette! Oh well! As soon as I found the salon I was able to deduce that it was a private room. My stylists name was Lesile. When he told me that he had been in the business for 35 years the little fan girl inside of me was awakened. I immediately asked him if he had styled the hair of any celebrities. He told me that indeed he had. Ivanka Trump, Olivia Newton-John, Ryan Phillipee, and Romée (Victoria Secret model). I had a wonderful experience. He spent a lot of time giving me a variety of treatments for my dry, Alaskan hair. To put a final touch to my look he decided to curl my hair. I was absolutely amazed at how effortlessly he used a flatiron to create soft ringlets to my hair. When I exclaimed how good he was he simply chuckled and said, "Welcome to New York." At the end of my appointment I didn't hang out in the city, instead I knew that I would have to go back to Connecticut and have dinner with my family. For this dinner we all met at Chilis. The highlight of this gathering was definitely the sharage of the lava cake.</image:title>

<image:caption>Just like my student who admired my passion in teaching my career unit, I couldn't help but acknowledge that I was throwing away my shot and not following my dream. So whenever I pass by the "Hamilton" marquee I can't help but exclaim to myself that "I am not throwin' away my shot,"of course with my shot comes some definite breaking periods. Like Memorial Day when there was a parade in New Canaan, a service at the cemetery, and festivities at the firehouse.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - "Onward and Upward"</image:title>
<image:caption>Oftentimes when life is difficult I remind myself that I must go "onward and upward" but not in an ignorant/misogynistic way like Rosemary Pilkington who was part of the show that I directed and choreographed for FLOT, but in a quest for all woman-kind or just anyone who has felt sort of like they didn't fit in. I have found that having a man in one's life is extremely difficult and is a real time eliminator, therefore, I have become extremely good at budgeting my time, as you all know I am working towards making an income as a writer, I definitely have a ways to go, but eventually it will happen. I may have to sell-out and become a teacher and I find myself looking at casting calls wondering if I could ever go into acting. It is also my dream to work at an Equinox gym and meet Tina Fey and collaborate with her, because when she was nominated for a Tony award, she said that she cried right in the middle of Equinox, according to the New York Times. Hey, it could happen! Speaking of famous people citing. Both instances occurred in Times Square. The first I have no idea if this person was famous or eccentric and had an entourage of photographers ]</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Mother/Daughter Edition continues... - Play Review As a whole I thoroughly enjoyed the Broadway production of "Beetlejuice." I thought the lead character played by Alex Brightman was absolutely outstanding. I count myself as being an incredibly energetic individual, however I feel as if I piddle in comparison to this gentleman. Throughout most of the show he was required to be on stage and during every instance he had to be fully committed to this over-the-top persona. On the subway ride home I remarked to my mom how absolutely astounding this actor is and then added that I bet he crashes at the end of each day. I went into this show knowing that two of my favorite actors would be in this production: Kerry Butler (The actress who was Kira in the Broadway musical version of Xanadu, which is one of my favorite productions of all time. I actually met up with her on the street and we ended up taking a selfie. She is amazingly talented and is an equally amazing person.) Rob McClure was also in this production as the other half of the boring couple. I saw him perform in the musical "Chaplin" which next to Xanadu is one of my all-time favorites. His performance was heart-wrenching and absolutely beautiful. Even though both him and Kerry played a convincing couple a part of me was saddened to think that this part was so unsubstantial and that they are capable of so much more. The show never deviated from the zany flavor that it aimed to create. There were loads of special effects, innovative lighting tricks, and fun and laughter for all. I would highly recommend this show for anyone looking for an entertaining night out. It was just plain enjoyable and did not provoke a lot of thought</image:title>

<image:caption>The next step that I made in the succession of "stressful life" was to get a haircut done by my favorite stylist and friend at Cappelli D'Oro; Lesile. I honestly don't know how much hair is normal for one to lose on a daily basis, however suddenly I became freaked out that my hair was thinning due to stress. At the gym I had grown accustomed to watching "Live! with Kelly and Ryan" and on their show one day was Kim Kardashian. I noticed that her hairstyle was very cute and featured a bob.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anyways the title, "I'll Be There For You" is a nod to the theme song featured in the television show "Friends." I feel like I am a fairly dependable, attentive friend, and I feel incredibly lucky to have a wonderful group of friends. I am a definite Facebook user and I must say that I do stay in touch with the majority of my friends through this medium. My use of Instagram is marginal (I really feel that I need to take a course or read a book on its usage, because I'm not at all confident when posting photos on this platform.) The fact that I have Twitter listed on my business card is cringe-worthy. I actually feel guilty that I have so little content on this account. I'm convinced to have it be my New Year's Resolution to become more comfortable with Twitter and to post more tweets. I feel like it takes a very special breed of person to make it in New York City, combined with a set of fortunate circumstances. I am lucky enough that if I live incredibly frugally my parents have agreed to help me out as long as I continue to live a healthy lifestyle. Here is a picture of me coming home from my group therapy on the West side after having traversed through the noreaster conditions. Let me just restate that I was freezing and incredibly wet, not Bridget Jones wet, this was hypothermic wet.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Mama's Back in Town! - Here's me with two of the original waitresses from "Friar Tuck" who worked in New York City before I was even born. Another fun thing that we did was go to the musical "Tootsie." Through my friend Shirley I have been introduced to this Netflix series called "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." In it the main character is a lawyer who decides to uproot her life to West Covina, CA from New York City to ultimately follow the man she loves. Along the way it is inevitable that she encounters some issues like the man who she loves and decided to follow is in a committed relationship with a beautiful yoga instructor. Also one of the hangouts the main character frequents has this guy named "Greg" bartending there. Well, Greg develops this big crush for Becca (the main character) and sings an appropriate show number called "Settle for Me." Although sad, this number really did showcase his singing and dancing talent of Santino Fontana and secured him the title role in the Broadway musical "Tootsie." A part of me was really excited to see somebody who I had "followed" (very loosely) the career of. My mother and I decided that the show in itself was not good. To quote my mother it was "Dudsville." The fact that our seats were quite far away from the action may have contributed to our lackluster experience, however from the opening number we were able to see that we were not in for a great experience. They say not to judge a book by its cover, but on Broadway the opening number does set the tone for the entire experience.</image:title>

<image:caption>Life can't be all fun and games, a part of life has to be devoted to improving your craft. One day in my group therapy the app. "Meetup" came up as a topic. In addition to hearing the stories of mania and depression we talk about interesting aspects of life. For some reason the Meetup group that involves "cuddling" came to the forefront of our discussion. I couldn't believe that an entire group could be devoted to cuddling. So one of the Meetups that I decided to go to was a live broadcast of a podcast featuring an interview with Alex Wolf who is a tech. junkie and Social Media Wizard. After her interview I became totally convinced that I needed to read her book and become totally fluent at "Instagram." I ended up buying her book and that's a picture of me and Alex Wolf posing next to her book, which I have managed to get about half-way through.</image:caption>

My friend Shirley knows this guy named Will Friedwell who writes an art column for the "Wall Street Journal" and writes a blog that is called "Will's New York City Night Life." Anyways I was able to contact him through email and set up an outing at the "Iridium." I have to say this whole experience made me feel completely grown up and I'm incredibly grateful that this experience was made possible.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A few days later we went to "Slava's Snow Show." Since Valerie and Barry (coolest power couple ever, who came to Fairbanks and taught percussion at the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival) play in "The Lion King" pit orchestra and were given comp. tickets to this show. Being awesome and totally thoughtful they decided to bring me and Shirley along for this wonderful experience. Here is a photo that we took at intermission in front of the Snow Show backdrop. They have snow as a prop to throw up in the air and by the time this photo was taken I'm afraid that we were all posed out, but Shirley with her energizer bunny-like tendencies was still going strong and was the only one who was able to incorporate the snow into the shot.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Another spot that is becoming a hangout is "Don't Tell Mama." Once again my friend Shirley who really is one of the most thoughtful people and really does have the best connections introduced me to this place. Ricky Ritzel who is pictured in the middle of this photograph is the piano player who plays in a cabaret style and mixes a whole lot of showtunes and past hits together. Dr. James Johnson also came to this outing as well as Shirley's attorney friend Ami.</image:caption>

I guess being one of the theatre makes my voyages through Times Square inevitable. On my way through I have seen many-an-action figure, but this inflatable Ted was truly remarkable.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In my New York stint I have managed to do a lot of soul searching along the way, have experienced so many wonderful adventures, and have passed the three month mark of a relationship (even if I had only technically reached friendship status, that is still something to applaud). In this photograph I am featured as an attendee of the Producer's Pro Super Conference. I was very happy to showcase my name tag in this photo which labeled me as hailing from Astoria, NY. Wow! This was a first for me. I finally had made my way out of coming from Fairbanks, AK. For this conference it was two days of listening to panel discussions and at the end of the day there were always KeyNote speakers. For these KeyNote speakers I was able to listen to Joe Iconis who wrote, conceived, and composed "Be More Chill" and Stephanie J. Block who recently won the Tony Award for her portrayal of Cher in "The Cher Show." I have to say that Joe Iconis was weird, eclectic, and a true artist, however Stephanie J. Block gave an absolutely amazing speech. She was a last minute speaker who served as an understudy for Heidi Schreck (What the Constitution Means to Me) and was absolutely amazing and inspiring. I wish that she hadn't spoken dead last at a time where I had absolutely no energy left. I wasn't even able to muster up enough energy to pull my phone out of my purse and take a photo. This next featured photo is of one of the panel discussions that I sat in on. I felt so privileged to be in the presence of Andrew Lippa who composed the score for "The Wild Party," "The Addams' Family," and "Big Fish." At this point I do not feel comfortable approaching these geniuses or asking questions. To this day I feel that I am still catching up or learning through "osmosis." But by listening and surrounding myself with like-minded individuals, I hope that one day I will feel comfortable interacting and possibly even collaborating with them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I remember while sitting in my living room just prior to leaving for the Big Apple, I watched a Sutton Foster PBS special. In it she sang the Kander and Ebb song "Say Yes." I'll never forget the piece of advice she gave to her audience, "In life just say Yes, unless it's for porn." I have taken on that mentality while in New York City. I always try to say "Yes" because "Yes" leads to so many wonderful opportunities and you never know who will be waiting around that corner prepared to say "Yes" to whatever it is that you're looking for.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In addition to my theatrical life I love to window shop and one day imagine that my life will be glamorous enough to wear a dress like this. I'll never forget when I lived in Orlando, FL for Personal Training School and used to treat myself to shopping trips in Winter Park. After a sad realization that I needed to end a relationship, I decided to take to responsible retail therapy. I ended up buying a glamorous, overpriced ballero that I will someday be able to pair with a beautiful outfit.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Je suis occupée - As soon as I got home that's when the seriousness began. I had actually started writing Book 2 of the Singlehood trilogy while back in Fairbanks before deciding to write Book 3. I ultimately decided that writing Book 3 would be so much easier and relevant to my current living situation at the time. Well I was right. It was easier and was something that I was able to write up in less than three months, while pretty much working full time. Book 2 has been a work of procrastination, no longer do I wish to sarcastically put myself down and laugh at heartache. It is too painful, and something that I do not wish to relive by any means. In Book 3 I thought that I'd be able to tie the ending up with a bow and state that I had finally found love, but being a skeptic is never the answer. I describe to people that my books have an unsatisfying sort of "La La Land" ish ending, where the main character is left in a perpetual search for love, but will never find it until she loves herself. I already wrote my ending and it is so painful to go back and relive my past. I made so many mistakes the first time that I went to New York that it is difficult to go back five years and make sense of everything that occurred before Book 3. Well, the reason why many New Yorkers go on retreats is to get down to business. The fact is there always seems to be some reason or event for going into the city. My hopes for being completely disciplined can easily be shattered. In the past when I have avoided doing work I find that I suddenly become obsessed with cleaning my surroundings and I have even gotten a haircut just to avoid studying for a test. In New York I have to say that I have come to find that it is the land of distractions. Oftentimes participating in artistic events is the reason why I excuse myself from doing my writing. Here are some photos of me gallivanting around the city instead of hunkering down and getting to work.</image:title>

<image:caption>So, sometimes the mindset of being occupée, doesn't lead to complete productivity. Sometimes you just have to write a day, week, month, hopefully not a year off as not being completely productive. Maybe I was lucky when I wrote my 3rd book and the words seemed to flow out of my being. That does not make me a bad person for struggling slightly as I write my 2nd book. I am extremely lucky to be going on this artistic journey where my parents are supporting me mentally and financially. I have loving relatives who are always there to support me along the way, and I have some of the best friends who are there to encourage and lift me up at all times. I have learned that sometimes it is necessary for me to relax, drink a milkshake, and marvel that I am living in the greatest city in the world where opportunities abound and are waiting for me to seize.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the major components of this tour was getting outside and enjoying the holiday storefront windows. This picture was taken at "Bloomingdales" but as part of the tour, we ended up going to three different locations: (1) "Bergdorf Goodman's" (2) "Bloomingdales, and (3) "Macy's." I found the window displays to be truly magical, a little over the top, but that's what this city is truly about. Either "Go big or go home" is the mentality here. I'll never forget once I was taking a dance class at the Broadway Dance Center in Midtown and one of the teachers said something that I will never forget, "If you mess up, do it big!" So whenever I do anything I make sure to do it big, because at least from my failure there will be evidence that I tried.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After celebrating, it was back to life in the city. Even though life here is exciting, it doesn't mean that it's void of problems. Whenever I find myself feeling down, stressed, or overwhelmed I look up and think to myself that "this is exactly what I have wanted for all of these years" and sometimes the best thing to do is simply marvel at the endless possibilities that surround you in the city of dreams. This is the view that I'm greeted with every time I exit the subway and with it I can't help but think that I'm the luckiest girl in the world!</image:caption>

<image:caption>A few days later marked a long weekend that I spent in Connecticut. Just prior to that epic weekend I spent my days running errands and bien sûr (of course) taking the subway. Now riding the subway is not necessarily a glamorous way to travel, therefore, I have noticed that I do not have any pictures that document this event, so one day while having to wait lengthy periods of time in between subway stops, I found that I naturally struck up a conversation with the fellow sitting beside me. I told him a little bit about myself and mentioned that I was a writer and therefore did not miss an opportunity to pass out a business card. I also told him that I was a faithful blogger and I asked him if he could take a picture of me riding the train. Now, it's important to note that subway and train are used interchangeably. The word train is always used to describe a journey taken on the LIRR or MTA, however "train" is a word that you sort of get the feel for, sort of like "good" and "well," you just intuitively know when it's appropriate to use either one.</image:caption>

My Aunt Marilyn even went so far as to buy me a special German Chocolate Cake for my Birthday. My birthday did not happen to fall on Thanksgiving this year but next year my mom already informed me that it does, so watch out! Wherever I am, there will be some candles in a turkey! <image:caption>Here's a picture of me riding the subway Onto my weekend in Connecticut. Initially I was planning on there to see the Macy's Parade, but that was definitely a no-go. Of course waking up and finding the motivation to make the trek to Grand Central, to New Canaan, to my aunt and uncle's house does require a lot of motivation, and trying to complete that whole charade prior to 9:00 in the morning, was just impossible. So when I got to the house of course my Aunt Liza and Uncle Lenny were there, because they actually live in New Canaan. Then my Aunt Marilyn and Uncle Gene came down from Newtown and then my cousin JR came with his two kids Jack and Maggie.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A lot of my New York life is dedicated to taking in as much art as possible (visual arts, music, dance, writing, etc.) and supporting and connecting with as many Alaskans as possible. Fairbanks is the artistic mecca of Alaska and is home to a great many artists who have actually relocated to the tri-state area. Through Shirley Scott (my friend and true connections diva) I have been able to talk with Dr. James Johnson. He was head of the music department at the university in Fairbanks, before my time, however, from time to time he would give my brother piano lessons. Anyways he is an organist at a church out in Staten Island where I actually ventured with his husband. At this concert I was also pleasantly surprised that two other past Fairbanksans (John & Kathy Butler-Hopkins) were also performing. Dr. Hopkins guest conducted the choir and Dr. Butler-Hopkins played violin accompaniment. This concert/service was absolutely gorgeous and I'm so glad that I went. Afterwards we all went out to eat, and above is a photo that was taken of our entire group. Well, that ended up being quite a night. The overall pace reminded me of the time that I spent in France. I have to say that no one really seemed to really be concerned by the time. That night I ended up getting to bed around 2:00 AM.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Even though I was able to recognize that my romantic life was kind of in shambles, I didn't let that bother me. "Onward and upward" is the name of the game. So after listening to a Podcast with a special guest appearance by the one and only Shirley Scott, I was inspired to join "Goldstar" a half-priced ticketing service. Well "Goldstar" had a ticket deal for the Hip Hop Nutcracker, so being an ultra dance enthusiast and annual attendee of "the Nutcracker," I decided to go. Here is a photo of me pulling out my hardest-core hip hop pose just before the performance. This picture was taken by a man that I had befriended on my way over to the theatre from the subway station. When I asked if he would snap a photo of me I think that it would be a typical point and shoot, but was visibly shocked when I pulled out this elaborate pose!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Just before I was to go back to Alaska, I made sure to accomplish a few things on my ToDo list. One of them was to go over to Bruce's apartment and see his gorgeous Christmas tree. I don't think I have discussed my lack of ability when it comes to navigation in quite some time, however, this time definitely qualified as exhibiting some quality lack of orientation. After having ventured into the wrong building while strangely gaining entry, we were able to conference call and then establish that I had not walked far enough down the avenue. Once I had arrived at the correct apartment I was amazed at how beautiful everything was in there. I guess that's just the annoying thing about being poor and unable to afford much of anything; this causes you to be jaded and not realize that one day it will be possible to have a beautiful apartment in Manhattan.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have been neglecting to mention Ron, because I must say that a lot of the memories that we experienced were not good. I try to remain to be fairly positive, but I must admit that Ron really did put me to the test. Over the past few months I must admit that we did spend quite a bit of time together and somehow I relayed to him that I truly wanted to fall in love with someone who treated me like a princess. Then he asked me if he could serve as my prince? I just shook my head and told him that our story was too sad. I'm afraid that this is the last picture and the favorite one that we had taken together. It was taken at a bar in the Underground Market that had amazing holiday decorations. We had just traveled from the Bronx where Jennie Herreid held her annual holiday party, This event was so classy and solidified that it is possible for me to one day give a sophisticated party.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'll never forget this experience. At first I'll admit that I was kind of weirded out by this woman wearing a kimono who just randomly turned on a boom box and dramatically started flinging paint onto a blank canvas, but then I realized how beautiful it was. I cannot express in words the release of emotions that I experienced as she slammed different colors onto the canvas, but I was able to identify that I had never seen anything like that ever before.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Holiday Magic!</image:title>
<image:caption>The last thing on my ToDo list to accomplish in the city was to go see Harry Connick Jr. sing Cole Porter on Broadway. I was very glad that I was able to see this show, and I'm sure that it was a limited run, but I left with mixed feelings after it was all done. This anecdote about the operation of the Judy Garland show remains to be very famous. It is well known that she starred in her own television series for a year in 1963 and on the show they had her doing skits, dancing with her guest stars, doing comedy, and singing on occasion. It wasn't until the show was canceled that she began to do what she was known for - belting out songs with extreme conviction and emotion. At that point her ratings began to improve. That's the way I felt at this show. Connick tried to wow his audiences with plasma screens, amazing props, and complex choreography when all we really wanted to do was hear him sing. When he simply did what we had paid for, it was exquisite.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - I'll Be Home for Christmas</image:title>
<image:caption>The journey home was a definite schlepp. I'm afraid the I have become accustomed to a perpetual schlepp in NYC. You sort of have to live your life like a glamorous back packer who doesn't have easy access to a home base. At all times I make sure to have my 2 books, lap top, business cards, sunglasses, a water bottle, and a granola bar on me. I have learned how to live in a concise manner, and I'm afraid that my trip to Fairbanks led me to travel only with a carry-on bag, where I brought only the bare essentials. The actual flight home was about 7 hours, but with the 4 hour time change that equals 11 hours, and then you have to figure in layover time. When it was all said and done, the journey home ended up taking around 20 hours. In order to get to JFK this frugal individual did not take an Uber or a Cab, instead she took it upon herself to take the subway and the airtrain, so that in itself added 3 hours to the travel time. Fortunately when I had finally made it on the plane, I was able to travel for approximately 4.5 hours until Seattle. Once I had made it to Seattle I realized that there was no question about it. I had missed my connection. I mean it wasn't even a close call, it was a blatant miss. I therefore made my way up to the Customer Service Counter and was expecting a nightmarish situation to take place, kind of like in Home Alone, but fortunately the girl was able to find a seat for me on the next flight. After that I found that I had about 3 hours to kill, so I decided to go to a Thai restaurant, and that's where this picture was taken. When I finally arrived home I'm afraid that my dad was the only one who was willing to brave the late night hour that I arrived (2 AM) as well as the cold weather, it was -30 below. It was so freezing that the air seriously took my breath away.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For Christmas I strive to buy thoughtful yet inexpensive gifts. My dad and I have this ongoing joke about his weight loss. I don't know if he considers it to be so much as a joke or a nag-fest, however, I was at Fish Eddys (one of my favorite stores in the city) and came upon this plate, and knew that it was destined to be in the kitchen of my father. I must say he did give off quite a chuckle when he opened this and being the mathematician/engineer gave him the ability to utilize this plate to its fullest potential. He is quite the chip enthusiast and one day he proudly showed me his jenga-like configuration of Kettle chips stacked on this plate, most likely defeating the purpose of the healthy portion control that this plate promotes. Here is a photo of him proudly holding up his healthy stack of chips on his "portion controlled" pedestal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To continue on with the family merriment, we had a big family gathering the next night. Unfortunately at the time a flu was sweeping the town therefore all but one of my little cousins (kids of the cousins) were not there, but it still was a great celebration. At one point my phone was laying on the coffee table and my Uncle Duane started in with the shenanigans of taking a variety of weird selfies on my phone. Basically by the end of the night this game had taken off and virtually any phone that was left unattended became up for grabs. Here are some of the photos that were taken.</image:caption>

Atticus is really an amazing child. He is very calm, courteous, and inquisitive. My brother Michael was like that as a child at one point in the evening Atticus and Michael played a game of cribbage. It was amazing for us to realize that two like-minds were coming together and collaborating. Here's a photo that captures this process of playing the game.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As you can tell from these photos, my mom has quite the safari theme going on with her furniture. I'm not really sure what the initial inspiration was that led to this outlandish decorative choice, but over time everyone has just decided to go along for the ride. I must say having this animal theme really does make present giving a lot easier. If you happen to find anything that has an animal print, you can just give it to her. The trait of being a truly unique decorator must have initially come from her mother (my Grandma Maggie). Just before I left town I made sure to pay my grandma a visit at the Pioneer Home. When talking to her I always state how gorgeous her nails are, and in this photo taken of us our conversation centered around the beautiful state of her nails.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'm afraid to say that I did not take this photo, but from my GoogleSearch options, I found this one to be capable of providing my non-Alaskan audience a picture of what it looks like when it's -30 below, the same temperature that I experienced when I arrived. Going out for the first time brought back the memories of the extreme cold and why Alaskan's are a specific type of breed that knows how to endure these cold temperatures. Once I had made it home, I was reunited with "the animals" Kit and Willie and also my dear, sweet mother. It was amazing to experience a wonderful house, with a full fridge, and a big bedroom downstairs. Life is good back in the 'Banks,</image:caption>

<image:caption>After all of that schlepping it is necessary to get a good night's sleep. As I've explained throughout this blog my friend Shirley has and continues to show me some of the most beautiful/artistic things about the city, she also gave me some of her clothes that she wore in her 20s. This nightgown was a part of them and after I went to Alaska and my mom did some slight alterations, I decided to wear it. I remember a part of "Eat, Pray, Love" where the main character Liz looked at a beautiful nightgown and asked herself "Pour Qui?" (for who). Even though I found myself to be in a situation where I was newly single, I never wanted to ask myself who I was wearing something beautiful for. I am always worthy!</image:caption>

<image:caption>In New York, I have found that it's important to keep a routine going. Whenever Shirley Scott is in town I make sure to hit up "Don't Tell Mamas" to see Ricki Ritzel. At his piano bar events we really have so much fun and I've found that he is like a walking encyclopedia in anything related to musicals and Broadway. I remember one time I was simply walking to "Don't Tell Mama's" or (DTM) as we abbreviate it in texts and I ran into Ricki Ritzel on the street. He exclaimed, "Michelle" and gave me a big hug.</image:caption>

<image:caption>BroadwayCon is such a fun gathering, and it's approaching on too over the top for me, but it's a celebration of nerdiness and acceptance of any identification, religion, personality, or disability. The Broadway community is such a wonderful place to find and be a part of. It's not all about the shows, it's about the journey that goes along with them. Once I remember waiting for all of the tickets to be sold to open up the ability for standing room for the show "Waitress" with Sarah Barellis. The show was quite good, but the six hour wait in the lobby is what made this experience truly memorable. In the process everyone organically tells stories and their tales of becoming a musical theatre enthusiast, and at intermission the guy standing next to me told me that he admired my extreme dedication to the theatre world. At the time I was living in Alaska and was taking back my love, enthusiasm, and appreciation for musical theatre and transferring this knowledge to the theatre scene in Fairbanks, AK.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Getting ready for BroadwayCon 2020. Fun fact! The dress was created from a Value Village find which served as the source material. When altering it my mom would have me try it on and at one point she was trying to forgo a zipper, so as I lay on the bathroom floor attempting to squeeze into this dress, she told me to suck it in. Realizing that I have very little to "suck in" led her to the decision to put in a zipper!</image:caption>

<image:caption>By day 2 of any con I always find that I am kind of exhausted and need to dress down and simply absorb. Well, as you can see, Ursela: the sea witch wasn't feeling any fatigue and must have come out of her underwater crevice in rip roaring fashion, ready to pose and schmooze with any individual. I wasn't about to let this quality photo opp walk/swim by therefore I made sure to pose for my moment of stardom.</image:caption>

<image:caption>After my brief visit with the sea witch, who DID NOT take my voice, I ventured in (yet again) to the gift shop. While circulating and weighing my options I did managed to get approached by a voting recruiter. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. I was able to claim residency in New York and transfer all of my existing voting information to my new precinct! Once I had filled out all of the paperwork I was asked if I would like to take a picture at their booth. They even had created a variety of signs that had to do with voting and related it back to a Broadway show. The one that I am holding is from "Mean Girls." It must be known by now that theatre people are very exuberant and therefore enjoy taking pictures, therefore, any excuse for a photo opp. is always welcome in the world of Broadway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>By day 3 of BroadwayCon I must say that I was experiencing both this sense of sadness and relief. I knew that a part of me would miss being fed this wonderful information that I valued so deeply, and experiencing this sense of community is so wonderful that it cannot be recreated until next year rolls around. There was another part of me that just knew that no longer could I keep up with this relentless pace. On the last day I went to a seminar of the villains in Sondheim musicals. It was given by a man who had a PsyD and studied musicals by Sondheim as a mere hobby. It is a given that if one is an appreciator of Sondheim then they have reached the pinnacle of musical theatre nerdiness. Sondheim is to musical theatre as Shakespeare is to straight theatre. Both began as more approachable and gravitated to the profound and less mainstream. I absolutely adore Sondheim, however feel that there's always time to broaden my repertoire of his music and lyrics. Next I hoofed it on down to the main stage for the final farewell performance. I was a little disappointed that no one was scheduled to speak, however, just a good solid sing-a-long was able to suffice. So the last thing that was played at BroadwayCon 2020 was "Seasons of Love," and what a gorgeous ending to a fabulous weekend.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As soon as we got home our minds immediately shifted gears to decorating the common area. Because it is a Risse virtue to conserve money, we managed to find the "duncan phyfe" table out with the trash that was along the sidewalk, schlepped it up the stairs, and proceeded to scour the heck out of it in the bath tub. I must say that it now serves as my writing desk and is readily available for a dinner party because the table can open up and accommodate quite a large crowd. Many of the photos/prints that I've decided to hang in the living room I either purchased at BroadwayCon or had from my year-long stint up in Barrow. The couch cover was ordered by my Aunt Pat and initially we thought that it would serve as a rug, but when we draped it upon my couch it was just perfection and it will stay there until the day that I move.</image:caption>

Many were oblivious to the action, while many including myself were clearly shaken. Here's a photo that was taken by my mother that captures the sheer terror that I experienced while observing this rat who was obviously scrounging for some leftovers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wednesdays I refer to as my therapy day. I see my general therapist at Bellevue in the afternoon and then in the evening I make sure to go to my Bipolar support group uptown on the Westside. I feel so blessed to be part of a community where an entire group can be devoted to one specific mental illness. Whenever my mom pays me a visit she makes sure to visit the friends and family group. I kind of go to this group religiously. I feel quite confident that I am now in a place where I have learned to utilize strong coping skills, am compliant with my medication, and can identify and avoid any triggers that disrupt my way of life. I feel that it's so important to ensure that I stay in check by going to groups like this, and refer to my continued need for therapy as "maintenance." Ever since the month of August when I started attending this group, I have been an active participant in all meetings that I attend, so much so that I was invited to attend a training to be a group facilitator. What a privilege and honor, to be able to brighten other people's days.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the great things, other than living in total comfort, about having my mom come and pay me a visit is that she comes fully equipped with items to improve the appearance and operation of my apartment. I asked her to bring this quilt from Alaska so that I could put it on my bed in my new room in the city. This quilt is indeed an antique and in itself is kind of falling apart, but it was so important that this quilt eventually made it to New York City. I feel like it brightens my room and actually makes it appear to be quite attractive. I can still remember when and where I was when I purchased this quilt. At the time I thought that it was absolutely beautiful, and I still do. I remember I went into the "Ornamentary" a little gift shop that is only open during the Christmas and Easter season. As I was browsing this shop during the Christmas season, I came across a laundry rack that featured a variety of beautiful handmade quilts. They were only $35, and I knew that one day I would bring this quilt to my NYC apartment. I am pleased to announce that day has finally arrived. As I went to checkout, I remember my dad was with me. I proceeded to tell the lady who owned the shop my plan to bring this gorgeous quilt to my apartment that I would one day rent in New York. She was happy that I would be decorating my room with such style and grace but was ultimately sad that I was not planning to stick around the 'Banks. Even though I really have no plan to live back in Fairbanks, I'm afraid that my love for Fairbanks is something that will never fade away. It is my ultimate dream to one day be able to originate a Broadway musical (that I will write of course) in Fairbanks to further bring awareness to our state about the importance of arts for personal development. When my mom first came to my apartment, I helped her up the stairs and then we put away some stuff. Then pretty much immediately we went over to join some friends at "Don't Tell Mama." Of course Shirley was part of the gang that we met at the piano bar and she told us that night that she was going over to "The Birdland." Being a true enthusiast of "The Birdland," it has been my mission for several years to get my mom over to see this landmark and all its glory! Out of the blue she mentioned that on this night she would be up for a late night at "The Birdland." To say that I was shocked would have been an understatement. I couldn't believe that after 5,000 of travel and some definite schlepping, that she was up for a night that might go until 1 AM. But she persevered! The first photo of this blog features the two of us at "The Birdland" with an epic photo bomb by the one and only Billy Stritch! Now, Billy is beyond talented and was actually Liza Minnelli's accompanist and musical arranger. I have been to "The Birdland" a number of times and have never seen him stressed or at all frantic. His repertoire is unreal and his talent is off the charts. I have seen him make arrangements on the spot, offer assistance to singers who didn't know the melody or lyrics, and he also sings in the style of Mel Tormé.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have to say that my mom is such a mother. Ever since we saw "Beauty and the Beast" in the West End my love for theatre has absolutely captivated her. She knows how much I adore going to the theatre and oftentimes tells me that she doesn't know what to look at, me or the stage. After that late night out, we managed to catch the subway, and then immediately went to bed. The next day we went over to Shirley Scott's lovely apartment next to the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridge. The view at this apartment is absolutely unreal and the amenities are outstanding. First we had a beautiful salmon dinner in Shirley's apartment, and then we ventured down to the movie theater to watch the new Mr. Roger's movie starring Tom Hanks. For dinner, dessert, and pre-film merriment, bass player Steve Doyle joined us. It was so special to have him socialize with us and establish himself as one of the crew!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The next step was to go spend some time in Connecticut. Part of that five star weekend which featured ... family, food, and fun was a chance to get manicures and pedicures with my cousin Maggie. Well technically she's the daughter of my first cousin J.R., but I just like to call her my cousin, it makes me feel younger, plus it's easier. Whenever I go through this nail process I can't help but think of the Missy Elliot song "Work It" and put a minor alteration on to the lyrics "Get a pedicure, get your nails did." For this picture it was my idea to showcase our nails in a ridiculous thriller type pose. Maggie, being a good sport, was a bit reluctant, but compliant.</image:caption>

Now, Helen was a Cabaret artist that came up to Fairbanks during the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival. When she met me I was absolutely obsessed with Judy Garland and throughout the years we have somehow remained in contact. I'll attribute this ability to remain in touch with friends to my mother, the ultimate queen of corresponding, however I do think that I am a good student who will one day join the ranks of "the best."</image:caption>

<image:caption>There's a part of Miss Saigon (one of my all-time favorite musicals) where "the engineer" says "Welcome to... Dreamland." I don't really feel like their version of dreamland is amazing. It just features a Vietnamese gentleman's club, however as I walked into the Al Hirshfield theatre, I felt like I was truly in a dreamland. It was so magical and lively. I had previously learned at my Producers Pro. Convention that this show was so expensive to put on that it would take five years to recoup their initial investment. With that being said this show was absolutely amazing. I think they must have really done their homework and knew exactly what to do in order to please the audience. This show featured a lot of production numbers with amazing choreograph and more glitz and glamour than you could shake a stick at. This show was simply amazing and I would highly recommend it. Several times while watching it and I couldn't imagine that it was even possible for it to get better, that's when the can-can dancers would come on.</image:caption>

My new office consists of the "duncan phyfe" table that we rescued from the sidewalk trash and all of my artwork are pieces that my mom either brought from Alaska or things that I have acquired here. The point is that everything I put on the wall has a story and is completely intentional. I must say I do love my new office space, and I think for the most-part it is cheerful and leads to productivity. <image:caption>While at the City Center I saw advertisements for "Harry Townsend's Last Stand" and decided that I should go ahead and see this. I guess on this night I was feeling exceptionally single, therefore I decided to put on a pretty dress and feel beautiful. The play ended up being very good and was extremely thought provoking. It was all about a son coming to town to see his father and ultimately deliver the news that he needed to go to assisted living. It was so sad as he told his son that this house contained all of the good memories that he had shared with his late wife. The last line of the play was of the old man getting ready to close the door and just before he did he said, "Goodbye Jennie!" That line immediately made me tear up. Interesting fact: * Len Cariou won a Tony award for his portrayal of Sweeney Todd during the run with Angela Landsbury. This production was directed and produced by none other than Hal Prince. * Craig Bierko is an award winning actor that I recognized as Ray (the Jazz ADD bass player) from Sex and the City. Wow! It's amazing the legends of the stage and screen that you are able to see while experiencing life in New York City!</image:caption>

<image:caption>One day when in Staples looking to buy a mouse for my computer to avoid a finicky track pad I came across this pad of paper. First of all, let me just put it out there. I absolutely love "Office Supply Stores." There are some people who are addicted to buying shoes, but I find that I am one to overspend on stationary and sticky notes. Two summers ago when I was experiencing a bout of mania, my absolute favorite store to frequent was "Papayrus." I still love this store, but can identify it as a potential danger zone, so for now I'm going to stick to my homemade cards and innovative ways to create something comparable that I can send, but one day I know that I will once again be able to step into "Papayrus" and not agonize about the amount of money that I am spending.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here's one of my favorite photos with Jo and Dick Scott. I spent some of my happiest childhood times in their house. I'll never forget that I told my mom one day that I wanted to put on a show, and not knowing how to respond to that told me that I should talk to Jo Scott. Well Jo was completely encouraging and immediately became my mentor and one of my biggest fans. Jo Scott, however, realized that she could not do it alone. Dick made sure to bring home the bacon and provide stability for his wonderful family. He was also the most supportive individual. I'll never forget, when I was receiving flack and criticism for my book, Dick offered to proof read my book. I knew that this book would have been an uncomfortable read for him, but the fact that he was willing to help me out in a time of need meant the world to me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>So, as I continue to write, attend artistic events, take care of myself, set deadlines, and make lists, I know that I'm on my way to becoming a New Yorker. As I navigated the lower eastside with Salem I found that he was constantly Jay-walking and never using the cross-walks. I said "Hey, I like to feel safe, can we please use the cross-walk." In response he told me that real New Yorkers don't use cross walks. Well, according to a "Sex and the City" episode one doesn't become a true New Yorker until they've lived in New York for ten years. So... I guess I have nine more years to use the crosswalk!</image:caption>

<image:caption>March 17th was my wake-up call to life never being the same as we know it. My brother came from San Francisco and during his visit we were even afraid to hug each other and instead of sharing one last hug before his departure we managed to give off a elbow tap to indicate that we cared about each other and to offer positive sentiments and good luck to battle through this troubling period of life. Prior to covid, I remember on the phone we discussed how we would spend our first night together in the city. We talked about the possibility of going to a Broadway show. "Mrs. Doubtfire" was on my radar, because I absolutely love the lead "Rob McClure." He is so darned talented. I saw him in the musical "Chaplin" and his talent, grace, and believability just blew me away. I ended up seeing that show the week it closed, and it was so amazing that I saw it once again on its closing night. When he sang the 11 o clock number "Where Are All The People" I remember being mesmerized along with the rest of the audience, as he continued to tug on our heartstrings and sing the most beautiful melody that conveyed his character (Charlie Chaplin's) starpower fading from view. I also saw McClure perform on Broadway when my mom and I went to the musical "Beetlejuice." Although I loved this musical I felt that this role was too one dimensional for McClure and that he was capable of so much more. The last time I saw him perform was at BroadwayCon. He performed a segment from Mrs. Doubtfire and through that I was able to see that once again McClure would be able to showcase all of his talent through this unique leading role.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I have found that the Quarantine has served as a perfect time to accomplish cleaning projects. For this photo, first of all it's important to enjoy my outfit and notice that I am wearing heels. I try to treat everything as if it was capable of producing a wonderful opportunity, and cleaning is no exception. True to Michelle Risse form I have created a tool inventory list that I have taped to the cupboard door. Cleaning is an essential part of my happiness, without a clean environment there is no way for my creativity to be released. My ex. called me OCD but I don't know about that, I just require pleasant surroundings.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Throughout the day I like to go to "my office" which is kind of a joke because I have one room for sleeping, writing, and housing all of my possessions, but one day I'm sure that I will have my very own office. At the time this picture was taken, I was working on a series of extensive edits for my two books and I was using books like Amy Schumer's as exemplars to provide me with the format for professionally published books. Even though life wasn't that different for me, I found it difficult to now hear that I wasn't able to go anywhere and was forced to spend time indoors due to a nationwide pandemic. I must admit that initially I was petrified and placed the border on my facebook profile "Stay Safe and Stay Home," but eventually I became crippled by fear and figured out that exercising caution could be a way for me to re-enter civilization safely.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My mom has always worried about my lack of ability when it comes to cooking, but I quickly learned that I am a fairly good cook, however with my brain-type I am finally able to acknowledge that cooking is something that I do not enjoy doing. I feel that it is a huge time waster for me. I appreciate that there are many people out there who enjoy spending hours on meal preparation, not me, I start to resent anything that takes more than fifteen minutes. In the beginning of the quarantine my roommate and I used to alternate and take turns preparing dinner. On this occasion I made tacos. Not to toot my own horn, but they were delicious.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a photo of my roommate Lilly and I as we ate the elaborate taco feast that I prepared. Now you might be saying to yourself "Huh, I wonder how these photos are being taken, do they have some sort of in house photographer?" The answer is "Of course not!" Since my landlord Kurt is a musician and randomly a music stand was left behind which we extensively use as a tripod. We also set the camera on time release. It's quite an intense system that I feel over time we have perfected.</image:caption>
